Having garnered only two points from a possible 15 in the last five matches, Mumbai FC didn't have things going their way. In round 24 of the I League Mumbai FC faced the challenge from the inform table toppers Salgaocar SC in Goa.
The home side started with their best XI players with Ryuji Sueoka and Yusif Yakubu upfront while Mumbai FC had Malswamkima and Noel Wilson as the two central midfielders. It was the away side who got the first opportunity when Ebi Sukore intersected the back-line to find Kuttymani on the right whose shot lacked the required venom and direction. This sparked Salgaocar SC to attack as Sueoka's long range attempt fell straight into the hands of Nidhinlal. Gilbert Oliviera didn't disappoint, as he dazzled the crowd with his runs on the flank.
Mumbai FC took the lead when Keegan Pereira nodded home a cross from Nicholas Rodrigues as the Salgaocar custodian Karanjit Singh was caught by surprise. The trailing team yet again got into the act with some one touch football on display between Francis Fernandes and Sueoka before the Japanese passed it back to Yakubu whose pile-driver went wide.
The missed opportunities came back to fire them as they went down by two goals when Nicholas found Wilson whose overhead shot caught Karanjit Singh out of his line to put his side in a commanding position.
Sueoka was lucky not to have been sent-off by referee Dinesh Nair for his kick on Nidhinlal after the goalkeeper blocked the former's shot and did well to recover from the fumble. Karim Bencherifa, in order to turn things around, made a double substitution by bringing in Milagres Gonsalves and Cajetan Fernandes with Francis Fernandes and Tomba Singh being replaced.
After the break, the half time team talk did wonders as the Goan team certainly had more attacking intentions as the game demanded from them. However the better chances fell for Khalid Jamil's side as Karanjit Singh twice came to the rescue of the home side with back-to-back saves to deny Kuttymani and Henry Ezeh. Yakubu made amends for his missed chances but pulling one back in the 66th minute with Milagres Gonsalves playing his part with an assist. Just four minutes later, former Sporting Clube De Goa winger Nichalas Rodrigues fired one past Karanjit to regain the two goal advantage. It was in the final ten minutes that Bencherifa replaced a full back for a winger in the form of James Singh being introduced for Jaspal Singh.
In the 87th minute, Rino Anto's effort was thwarted by Nidhinlal only to see the ball land at the feet of Milagres who slotted the ball home. With this win Mumbai FC are back on the 5th spot on the I league table. The boys will be travelling to Kolhapur for the next round of matches as they take on the AIFF IX on the 7th April.
Cheers to Mumbai FC!!!
